Out from the past, into the future! In the 1980’s, Ruby Ray moved to NYC and began a series of photographs that would take inspiration from ancient art, showing them in East Village Galleries. Simultaneously, while creating an analog multiple projection show for the Saqqara Dogs, she discovered and purchased fractal slides from a scientific catalog to project during their performances. This piece combines both of her major directions – photography and fractal art. The figure’s pose is an Egyptian hieroglyph signifying “Jubilation”, and was taken in 1984. In 2016 she discovered it and collaged a fractal onto the photo, draping it over the figure. It took almost 40 years, but now the image was complete!
